Biography

I’m currently workin as a Cloud Consultant at Oblivion Cloud Control. I specialised myself in building high available environments using automation (Infrastructure as Code) combined with Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD).

Previously, my fascination with Cloud and Automation started when I was developing my research thesis for HvA in 2013. Back then Cloud providers were just starting to come up as a decent alternative to on-premise hosting providers. On-premise datacenters consisted of long-lived servers which needed to be patched and upgraded (both software/hardware). This used to be a time consuming task which needed dedicated engineers to monitor and maintain these servers.

Instead of maintaining these servers I got inspired to automate and make these environments scalable, self-healing and immutable (stateless). This meant I had to learn more about the DevOps way of thinking and use tooling such as cloudformation, git, python and bash. By continuously developing myself I’ve learned to adapt myself quickly to new emerging technologies.

My next step is to focus on topics such as Serverless and Big Data but will still continue to automate and use Infrastructure as Code.

As a Cloud Consultant I work directly with customers to accelerate their projects and recommend best-practice architectures in line with their long-term business outcomes. I have a technical relationship with the customer and operate as their trusted advisor. Their best interests will shape the guidance I provide.

As a Cloud Systems Engineer I was a member of the Managed Public Cloud (MPC) team. We ensured the success of our customers by building and migrating applications, software and services on the AWS platform using a high degree of automation (“Infrastructure as Code”).

Cloud Engineer

As a Cloud engineer I managed multiple infrastructures within Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS) each consisting of dozens of servers. We focused on designing high availability infrastructures using the best practices methodology of AWS.

Using auto-scaling groups and multiple availability zones we could deliver higher availability and lower costs compared to virtualised infrastructures such as Combell and Terremark. We combined system engineering, architecture skills and network expertise to build solid and vastly automated environments.

 
 
 
 
 

Application Engineer

May 2012 – Apr 2014 Amsterdam

As a system application engineer I was responsible for the middleware of the customer business infrastructure. I got to work with web- and application servers such as Apache and Tomcat.

We managed the servers using Puppet (open-source configuration management tool) and monitored the thresholds of the applications using Nagios to make sure the service we provide to the customer are delivered as agreed on the Service Level Agreement (SLA).
